Why vintage bags are worth the obsession

By Thea Neal of eversothea.com for Closet Angels

The shape. The timeless design. The feeling you get when you see another woman rocking *the* vintage bag you remember seeing in old issues of Vogue. Sigh.

For me, vintage designer bags are like the Maseratis of the purse world. They're gorgeous, they make a statement, and they age with grace. Check out my top reasons to snag a vintage designer bag:

FREE OF OVER THE TOP BRANDING

The best thing about vintage bags is that they're usually free of the now common place "ultra branding." These gorgeous Coach bags aren't screaming at you with interlocking C's all over the bags. It's almost like a fun surprise when you see a vintage bag you love, and then find out it's by one of your favorite designers.

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET
You also know how they'll wear. I've been the victim of buying a designer bag or two, and within a few months, see it change color or absorb the dye from my jeans. These bags have already gone through their wear and tear, so the color you see is the color you get. (Of course, if you sling your purse too intensely day to day, it'll still be victim of some damage. These purses aren't invincible - even if they look it!)

THEY HAVE A STORY

Whenever I carry my vintage bags, I can't help but think of the women before me who did the same thing. whether they carried their bag on a New York subway or shopping in France - your bag has a history that's fun to imagine, as well as make your own memories.

THEY MAKE GREAT GIFTS

I still curse my mom for not keeping her awesome bags from the '80s around. A vintage bag is a great gift for a younger family member, whether it's a daughter, sister or goddaughter. Instead of buying a trendy, spur of the moment bag, you're giving a classic, timeless gift.

Do you own any vintage designer bags? Lusting after a few? Keep an eye out this week for Closet Angel's selection to find your own bag crush.

Prints, Prints and Prints!

If this trend isn’t the perfect example of fashion being art, we give-up.  Phillip Pilotto, Mary Katrantzou and others have used their design expertise to manipulate and strategically place intricate print combinations to contour and outline the female physique, creating a tromp l’oeil effect.  The digital collages filled with busy patterns and vibrant colors create eye-popping looks that immediately trigger a “must shop now” instinct (you know what we are talking about!).  The only thing safe about this look is it is on high alert this season to charm and entrance.

SHOPPING

This Spring, make your list and check it twice.  Dress, skirt or stilettos, adding a bit of kaleidoscopic charisma to your wardrobe is an absolute must!  Here are some of our favorite pieces:

Top: 1, 2, 3, 4, Bottom:  5, 6, 7, 8

STYLING

Now, to do your prize patterns justice….  Masterpieces like these should never be let down, ladies!

Such bold, dramatic designs should never be tamed.  In fact, they are inviting you to layer more colour.  For example, in the above outfit, instead of a magenta skirt, you could easily pair one that is orange, Kelly green, etc.  And in the ensemble below, to simply wear a basic black sweater and matching pumps would do these pants a disservice.  The key to not looking cool, not crazy, is using accessories to anchor with neutrals or matching hues.

When it comes to such meticulous motifs, more is more.  Our only exception is to steer clear of mixing prints.  Don’t give these amazing works of art any competition; let them be an outfit’s focal point!

So, what do you think?  Do you dare to dabble in digital patterns?  How will you wear them?

Every reason to be “on the fringe”…

Every reason to be “on the fringe”…

Since the 1960s, fringed leather handbags have continuously reincarnated themselves season after season.  In other words, these beauties are a style without an expiration date.  Few fashion statements can linger with the same appeal as long as this one; being able to effortlessly maintain a simultaneous classic appearance while maintaining hip factor.

Whim, edge and hobo haute all zipped into one; we suggest you get on the fringe, STAT!  To master a modern bohemian chic, here are a few style tips to keep in mind:

Choose Classic Colors. These bags look best in classic, neutral shades like brown and black, but are especially fresh in gray.  Venturing into bright, bold hues will date the bag, taking away that beloved combination of timelessness, vintage charm.

Wear one at a time: Let your bag be the featured fringe item without giving it competition from other trendy accessories. You may love your fringe jacket and boots, but save them for another day!   An item as sassy as this deserves to be the center of attention.  In this case, the more is not merrier.

Juxtapose it. Pair the fringe with something unexpected.   A structured blazer, fitted pant, flirty dress, the list goes on...  The key to achieving long lasting fashion appeal is styling the bag with modern, trendy fashions.

As you can see, there are different shapes, sizes and styles of these textured bags for you to choose.  Regardless of personality, whether it is hippy, rocker, or preppy there is a way to incorporate the fringe into your frock.

Which is your favorite bag? What kind of look do you build around the accessory?
